After wearing
Untie self-tie bows by reversing the knot rather than pulling one end hard through the centre. Allow the tie to rest flat or hang loosely. Brush away surface dust with a clean, soft clothes brush appropriate to the fabric.
Cleaning
Follow the care label. Silk, wool and velvet often require specialist cleaning. Spot cleaning can create rings or alter sheen, so test only when the maker permits it. Avoid perfume, hairspray and makeup near delicate fabric.
Reshaping
Use light steam at a safe distance only if the care instructions allow it. Do not press velvet directly. For silk and cotton, place a clean cloth between the iron and bow tie and use the lowest suitable setting.
Storage
Store self-tie bows untied and flat, rolled loosely or hung from a smooth organiser. Pre-tied bows need enough space to preserve the wings. Keep them away from direct sunlight, damp and sharp hardware.
Travel
Pack the bow tie in a small box, garment folder or between soft clothing. Carry an event-critical tie in hand luggage. On arrival, unpack it early so minor creases can relax.
Simple home care kit
A useful care kit needs very little: a soft clothes brush, a clean white pressing cloth, acid-free tissue for delicate storage and a small box for travel. Use steamers, irons and stain products only when the fabric label permits them.
When to use a professional cleaner
Seek specialist advice for oily stains, makeup, wine, crushed velvet or valuable silk. Tell the cleaner the fibre content and point out the centre knot, where damage and residue often concentrate. Do not keep rubbing a stain after the first gentle blot; friction can change the surface permanently.
