Neck size
Adjustable bow ties are sold across a neck-size range. Measure around the base of the neck where the shirt collar sits, with enough room for comfortable breathing. Compare that measurement with the maker’s chart; do not assume a “one size” tie will fit every collar.
Finished width
The visible bow should generally remain within the broad visual width of the face. A very narrow bow can look lost with a wide collar and broad lapels, while an oversized bow can dominate the head and shoulders. Medium proportions are more versatile than extremes.
Collar relationship
The collar points should frame the bow rather than cover most of it. Spread collars create more open space and can support a fuller butterfly. Narrow point collars often look cleaner with a semi-butterfly or batwing. Wing collars are mainly associated with formal dress and require careful placement.
Comfort check
- You can insert one finger between the collar and neck without strain.
- The band remains hidden under the collar.
- The centre knot sits over the shirt placket.
- The bow does not tilt when you turn your head.
- The collar does not buckle or flare outward.

Look for both the adjustable neck range and the finished bow dimensions. Product images can be misleading because models, collars and camera distance vary. A return policy is especially valuable when trying an unfamiliar shape or maker.
