Echo one colour
Choose a pocket square containing one minor colour from the bow tie, or use a neutral white linen square. The relationship may also come from formality: matte tie with matte square, formal silk bow with a restrained silk or linen square.
Change the pattern scale
If the bow tie has small dots, the square can have a broader border or larger motif. If the bow tie is a large plaid, choose a solid or micro-patterned square. The eye should be able to distinguish the two accessories immediately.
Let one lead
For formal events, the bow tie usually leads and the pocket square supports. In a creative casual outfit, the square may carry more colour while the bow remains solid. Avoid equal visual intensity in both places.
Folds and formality
A straight presidential fold is clean and formal. A loose puff is softer. The fold should suit the jacket and event rather than imitate the shape of the bow tie.
Four dependable combinations
- Black formal bow: white linen square in a straight fold.
- Navy patterned bow: white or pale-blue square with a restrained border.
- Burgundy textured bow: cream square containing a small burgundy detail.
- Casual plaid bow: solid square in one of the plaid’s quieter colours.
These are templates, not mandatory sets. Remove the pocket square entirely if the outfit already contains enough detail.
